Well on with my post…

Happy Christmas eve!
So tonight the big man himself arrives to bring our bundles of joy their gifts.
Have they been good?
Does it matter anymore?

This probably one of the busiest days in the year for parents, I know it is for me.
As you have to do all the everyday stuff such as feed, dress and entertain your kids all while making sure that preparations for the big day are sorted.
I always have a list as long as my arm left on Christmas eve, all I can say is that I’m thankful that at least this year it doesn’t involve building a toy kitchen that took HOURS!

Here is how my day hopefully will run:-

  • Get up MEGA early to go last minute food shopping for fresh things like French sticks at about 6 am with my mum, leaving the hopefully still sleeping toddler in the sort of capable hands of her uncle ( also probably sleeping)
  • Get home, unpack, change into uniform and leave again.
  • Get work for 8.30am until 2pm.
  • at 9am on the dot go to the butchers for meat ( i’m lucky that my supervisor will let me nip out as its round the corner)
  • Go home to do my list of last minute things, make food for Christmas day etc.
  • Go to Costco to pick up platters.
  • Dropping off presents and food for Christmas day at Granddad’s. ( unless mum gets my cousin Ste to do it)
  • Open Christmas eve box with C
  • Picky bits tea in the evening with the family and my best friend.
  • Change beds.
  • Bathtime
  • Try and get overexcited toddler to sleep.
  • Load car with presents for the next morning.
  • Drink!
  • Get out C’s presents and arrange them in the livingroom.
  • Bedtime!

Hopefully I will get at least a few hours sleep as if you have read my other #12daysofparenting posts you will know that Christmas day is a busy one for use.

Merry Christmas!!!
to you and all your loved ones!

Nearly there now people!!!
Only the dreaded Christmas food shop to combat, every year the shops seem to get busier, I honestly dread stepping into a supermarket at this time of year, especially if I have to do it with a toddler in tow.

No matter how much I plan to get all my shopping sorted, wrapped and under the tree.
I inevitably still end up trying to buy presents and get them wrapped at the last minute.
I have a couple of presents that I have ordered and need to be collected from Tesco, then need to wrap them.

Don’t even get me started on the food shopping!
I need to go early on Christmas eve morning to get some things that just can’t be bought any earlier, things like French sticks, loaves of bread and meat for Christmas day evening.

I still have a list of shopping that I need to do, but after being told of queues to get into the local supermarket car park, and huge waits at the tills I can’t face the shops during daylight hours.
I am planning of going in the middle of the night when everyone else is sleeping, I’ll leave my dad and brother to listen out for the toddler, and me and mum can go at like 5 am to get it all!

When do you do your Christmas food shopping?
Are you ready for Christmas now?

On the tenth day of parenting….Parenting in December

To me with my limited parenting knowledge, well i’ve only been at it for 3 years, parenting in December seems to be completely different from any other time of the year as you have the help of Father Christmas and his elves to encourage your kids to be good.

Each morning when our elf Happy comes back from his trip to the north pole he brings a chocolate coin if C was a good girl the day before because Father Christmas sent it with him as a reward for her.

wpid-imag5367.jpg

At nearly 3 I believe that she can understand the consequences of her actions, and that not being good means not getting an extra treat. The start of December until Christmas is a long time for a child the using the bluff of not getting presents will be easily forgotten by such a small person.

Now it doesn’t always work but I am a true believer is sticking to your word, so don’t tell my daughter something that I wouldn’t do. So I tell her that if she isn’t good then Father Christmas will put her on the naughty list, and that means that Happy won’t bring her a chocolate coin when he comes back from his nightly visit.

Threatening that Father Christmas won’t bring her any toys seems a little silly as I know she will get them (and she has only asked for one thing off FC this year ) and it mean’s that I lied to her, which I don’t want to do.

What do you tell your kids?
Do you use Father Christmas to encourage good behaviour?

On the ninth day of parenting….Life doesn’t stop at Christmas
(wow day 9! are you still with me? :p )

What’s you favourite Christmas song?

For some Christmas is just another normal day, by this I mean that normal everyday things still need to happen, just because it’s Christmas doesn’t mean that the baby won’t want to be fed or the kids won’t argue. In fairness there will probably be more arguments like” he stole my new toy” or “it’s my go and she wont let me” and not just from the kids.

Parenting is a 24 hour 365 day a year job with no real time off, because even if you aren’t with your kids you are still thinking and worrying about them, and if your family is anything like mine then people also have to work on Christmas day, this year I will be working Christmas evening.

The world keeps turning and services still need to run, so while your unwrapping your presents and tucking into your turkey. Spare a thought for those who are in work when they would much rather be celebrating with their families.

If you have read our blog before then you will know that I adore baking and C has seemed to pick up the bug too.
I usually bake at least 5 Christmas cakes for us, friends and family, but this year I just didn’t find the time to get into the kitchen and make them, what will everything that we have been through in the last 6 months.

So we are making Christmas cupcakes to give with people’s presents on christmas day.
C and I made a batch on Monday to take into nursery as a Merry christmas gift for all the staff.

wpid-imag5419_1_1.jpg

She really enjoyed making and decorating them and the fact that Happy brought all the stuff for us to make them really helped me with the Elf on a shelf for this month as it’s our 1st year and I’m struggling to get some idea’s/ remember to set it up.

On the sixth day of parenting –  Top tips for Christmas day.
(still singing? :p )

Christmas with a child big or little will probably end in disaster if your not prepared for every eventuality.

So here are my top tops to surviving with your hair in tact and happy if tired children. :-

  • Buy extra batteries! – No matter how many you think you have make sure to get extra’s in a variety of shapes and sizes for all those lovely noisey toys that well meaning relatives have bought.
  • Lay out clothes for kids the day before – If your house is anything like mine, getting everyone up, presents open and ready to leave on time then you need all the help you can get. Laying out the kids clothes, including tights/socks and shoes means less things to be asked about while you are trying to do your make up. All you need is ” MUUUUUM, WHERE ARE MY ….” Shouted at full volume when your half asleep and trying to put on eye liner.
  • Eat out – Now I know some people love to cook Christmas dinner but seriously who wants to be up at 5am to cook a turkey and still be doing washing up at 11pm. Just eat out and leave the cooking and dishes to other people, its worth the cost!
  • Charge Electrical gifts – I’ve bought C a Vtech Innotab max for Christmas and I am going to unbox it, charge it and set it up. The last thing anyone especially an impatient toddler really want is to get a present that they can’t use right there and then.
  • Alcohol and sweets – During the day if your driving or have the kids to look after then Alcohol isn’t always an option, especially if like me 3 years ago and you are pregnant over Christmas.
If you aren’t once you are home and the kids are asleep why not enjoy a cheeky glass or two of your favourite tipple, or at least that box of chocolates of Auntie Maude without the kids help, well they do get enough.

What are your top tips for surviving Christmas day?
